The Fenghua honey peach is a representative of the rare fruits of Ningbo. Different from honey peaches produced in other places, it is larger, with thinner skin and thicker flesh. Besides, it is more juicy and tasty. The growing of honey peaches in Fenghua can be dated back to 2000 years ago. A story goes that back in the Han Dynasty two people who had lost the way in the forests of Fenghua and were starved nearly to death happened to find the honey peaches which finally saved their lives. The Fenghua honey peach is famed as "fruit from the abode of immortals". A myth says that Goddess the Queen Mother showed mercy for a filial son and granted him some honey peaches which saved his sick mother. Folklore has it that a gardener named Zhang Chongyin introduced the Longhua peach from Shanghai and grafted it into the local peach and bred the new honey peach. Now Fenghua has got 40 types of honey peaches. The planting and picking of Fenghua honey peaches are special. The grafted peach trees will have to have the flowers removed in the first and second years. The flowers on the third year will be kept and attended meticulously. Each growing peach will be wrapped with paper to protect it against sunshine and insects. Honey peach is nutritious. It helps gall secretion and promotes gastric and intestinal peristalsis, according to The Compendium of Materia Medica.
