An electronic health insurance card is a QR code that integrates the functions of electronic health card and electronic social security card. The card was first put into use in hospitals in Hangzhou on July 15 last year. After one year's promotion, it has covered 16 provincial hospitals, 72 municipal hospitals, 239 county-level hospitals and 231 grassroots medical institutions in the whole province.

This invisible virtual card simplifies the process of seeing a doctor. According to statistics, the application of the electronic health insurance card has reduced the number of traditional hospital visits from 8 to 3, and payment queuing times have been reduced from two to zero, which can save the average outpatient service process for nearly 20 minutes.

The health insurance card also breaks the data barrier between hospitals, promotes the sharing of diagnosis and treatment information across regions and institutions, and provides strong data support for industry supervision. It reduces unnecessary repeated examinations and improves the efficiency of medical services.

At present, the application scenario of health insurance card is expanding, and functions such as scheduled vaccination service, health examination report and self-service inquiry of health certificate of employees have been launched.

In the next step, Zhejiang will extend the health insurance card to designated medical institutions and pharmacies. By the end of 2020, the number of people applying for health insurance cards is expected to exceed 10 million.
