Sidelights of Huzhou's international forum on China's social governance

At an international forum on discussing the significance of China’s social governance to the world, British sociologist Martin Albrow was very much impressed by the achievements in Zhili, a town in Huzhou which is used to be a backward town but has transformed itself into the heart of China’s children’s fashion industry. Mr. Albrow is one of the foreign guests who have given high affirmation to China’s achievements on its social governance at the forum.

During the tea time, I had the opportunity to interview some guests of the forum, with whom we engaged in thorough discussions on some of the trendy topics related to international affairs. One of the topics is China’s engagement in the development of Africa.

China-Africa relations are gaining global attentions in recent years. However, when you searching for keywords like “China” and “Africa”, there is an overwhelming coverage of “new colonialism” or “plundering resources” etc. In terms of such claims, Babatunde Fagbayibo, a professor in international law from the University of South Africa indicates that these opinions are just too simplistic. Based upon his observations in the regional development and China’s engagement, Chinese investment and the regional integration of Africa in particular, the infrastructure deficits of some African countries have been made up with the help of Chinese investment. What’s more, China’s engagement in the regional integration of Africa, in his opinion, is built upon on a respectful manner.

The opinions of the experts at the forum may not be the attitudes of the world towards China, but they indeed indicate something. China’s social governance and its contribution to the international community are increasingly recognized by the world.

But it is also worth pointing out that China has never considered to export its political system to other countries. As President Xi says, China will not ask other countries to copy the Chinese practice.

In the future, we believe that China will further contribute to exchanges and mutual learning among the civilizations in the world, and advance the building of a community of shared future and create a better world.
