On November 9th, at the opening ceremony of 2019 Zhejiang Taizhou Huangyan Citrus Tourism Festival, the Director of China’s Citrus Research Institute (CRI) announced that Huangyan Mi Ju (literally means Huangyan Tangerine) is an important origin of world tangerines family, according to a new research finding. Such acknowledgement is a big step forward to Huangyan Mi Ju's resolution of getting listed in the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS).

Huangyan is a district of Taizhou, a city in Zhejiang Province. It is well-known for the cultivation of mandarin oranges with a long history. The most famous variety is called Huangyan Mi Ju or Huangyan Tangerine. This citrus fruit was once been proposed as the "No.1 of world fruits" in Southern Song Dynasty in China's history.

In order to protect this special Chinese appellation of origin, Huangyan District has been actively seeking solutions since recent years.

Since 2017, Huangyan District has released a blueprint to fully promote its tangerine brand and revitalize the local community. Up to present, Huangyan has made significant achievements in building up a coherent and comprehensive system highlighted by advanced technological supports and sophisticated marketing solutions, which integrates all three industries and fully appreciates Huangyan’s industrial advantages. Starting from the tangerine industry, Huangyan has speeded up the construction of countryside complex themed "the origin of China's mandarin organs" and the organization of cultural events and symposiums for the purpose to promote its tangerine brand.

Taking the citrus tourism festival as an example, Huangyan has scheduled a series of featured activities that enable visitors to experience the most authentic cultures, lifestyles and customs. Tourists will have access to things like cycling, riddle contest and picking tangerines etc. The festival has been successfully held for two times, and now it is the third. It is a good instance of Huangyan’s practice in the synthesis of agricultural heritage protection and the integration of agriculture and tourism.

Agricultural heritages are key fruits of human beings. It is important to safeguard those heritages and their associated landscapes, agricultural biodiversity and knowledge systems. Innovative and practical solutions to the protection of agricultural heritages are big contributions to the international community.

As it is known to all, China has always been playing a key role in the protection and development of agricultural heritages, as well as the implementation of rural revitalization. Modeled on the GIAHS, China has launched its own Nationally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (NIAHS) program, which demonstrates China’s determination to promote and conserve its rich agricultural heritage systems. As UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) official Mauro Angoletti said in an interview with Xinhua in 2018, China has been the most effective country in the world so far to protect the agricultural heritage.

The practice of Zhejiang’s Huangyan in dealing with the tangerine cultivation heritage is somehow a sound case study of China’s practice in the arena. It is believed that in terms of the protection of agricultural heritages and rural vitalization, green and sustainable solutions are in urgent need. And frankly, the case of Huangyan does give us a good roadmap.
