The Kanmen Dragon Fish Dance has a history of more than two hundred years. It is an important ritual for fishermen to pray for good weather and safe sailing. Recently, the 83-year-old inheritor of Kanmen Dragon Fish Lamp, an intangible cultural heritage of Taizhou, Xu Weiyu and his son Xu Zhen have been making dragon fish lamps in their studio.

The dragon fish lamp is made of bamboo rafts and fixed with cotton threads. It has to go through multiple processes such as pasting, sizing, drawing, coloring, decorating, etc. It takes about several days to complete a fish lamp. According to Xu Weiyu, he began to learn to make dragon fish lamps from his father when he was a kid. Now his son Xu Zhen has been making the lamps with him for more than 40 years and became the third generation inheritor of the family.
