Hong Kong police on Wednesday said there has been escalated violence in protests and assemblies over the past two months, pledging every effort to bring all offenders to justice.

"These radical protesters are tearing our society apart and tearing down our core values, including the rule of law," Tse said, adding that the whole society has started to pay the price.

Retail sales, tourism and logistics bore the first blow and the shadow is looming on the broader economy. As far, 31 countries and regions have issued travel advisories for Hong Kong. "Visitors are having second thought about coming to Hong Kong. It is high time to stop all acts of violence and restore Hong Kong public safety and order," Tse said.

Tse said the Hong Kong police take every case very seriously and have zero-tolerance for all unlawful acts, vowing to make every effort to bring all offenders to justice. Since the past weekend, the Hong Kong police have arrested 26 people suspected of participating in serious violent incidents since June 9.

She attributed Hong Kong's lasting prosperity and stability to the great conception of "One Country, Two Systems" and once again appealed to end violence and restore order so as to put Hong Kong back on track.

"Therefore, the central government should strictly support and supervise the law enforcement of the Hong Kong government and police and promote self-governing to solve the current dilemma," Tian told the Global Times.

Tian noted that the Hong Kong government has yet to exercise many of its legal rights such as the Public Order Ordinance and the chief executive enacting martial law in designated areas.

Police should also raise their level of deterrence and their control capability so that they can maintain the rule of law and protect citizens, Tian said, adding that the government and the whole community should support police in law enforcement to stop the violence.

When asked whether the Hong Kong government would use the Emergency Regulations Ordinance to curb protests, Chief Executive Carrie Lam responded earlier on Tuesday saying, "All of Hong Kong's laws, if they can provide a rule of law measure to stop violence and chaos, the government has the responsibility to examine them."

Meanwhile, she emphasized that the current situation is still under control, as the HKSAR government is supporting the law enforcement bodies and acting responsibly.

According to Hong Kong police, CNN has apologized for a misleading headline when covering the violent protest on the night of August 25.

In a letter sent to police on Wednesday, CNN Hong Kong's Vice President and Bureau Chief Roger Clark informed them that a headline was temporarily displayed on the CNN website saying "Police use petrol bombs and water cannons against Hong Kong Protesters," which he admitted was "erroneous" and later "replaced."

CNN apologized for this error and said it is "working hard to ensure that reporting of the Hong Kong protests is fair and balanced at all times."
