HKSAR chief executive promises to build dialogue platform, reiterates zero-tolerance to violence

Chief Executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Carrie Lam promised on Tuesday that the government will take maximum efforts to build the dialogue platform with the public.

At a press conference, Lam said she and other officials will forge ahead with the dialogue despite concerns that escalated violence has shaken its foundation, stressing its significance in resolving social disputes.

The chief executive discussed how to build the platform with representatives from all walks of life during a three-hour meeting on Saturday. At Monday's press conference, she expressed gratitude to more than 10 representatives of protesters, who, although under pressure, still attended the meeting on Saturday.

Lam said she and two senior officials also participated in a civil dialogue platform on Monday and listened to opinions of young people.

Some Western countries try to "fan flames" in Hong Kong, says Russian expert

Some Western countries are taking advantage of the situation in China's Hong Kong and trying to stir up tensions in the city and incite confrontation, a Russian expert has said.

In a recent interview with Xinhua, Alexei Maslov, head of the Oriental Studies Department of the Russian Higher School of Economics Research University, warned that the ongoing protests have "completely lost rationality."

Some in the West are trying to destabilize the situation there, "fan flames," and use the young people in Hong Kong to raise the wave against China," said Maslov.

West will shed no tears for Hong Kong

Violence has not only returned to the city, but also escalated. However, the opposition forces in Hong Kong have been making high-profile accusations against the police for using water cannons. Several Hong Kong police drew their guns and one fired a warning shot on Sunday. Yet all that was portrayed as so-called higher violence from the police. Western media continued to cater to the opposition's claims, describing the warning shot as a sign of escalating street conflicts there, downplaying the fact that rioters' attacks against Hong Kong police are becoming fiercer.

When police faces violent mobs, is firing warning shots out of self defense a restraint move or a "violent" one? If the same situation happens in New York or London, how would local police react?

So far, the clashes in Hong Kong have not led to any deaths, because police restraint and professionalism have played a key role. The Hong Kong police are under countless attacks and malicious treatment. The private information of thousands of police and their families has been exposed on the internet. While their lives are being threatened, their families are also paying a price. Is that what's supposed to happen in a modern society?

The rule of law in Hong Kong is being destroyed by some extremist forces, which is a heavy blow to the international financial center. It is easy to see that some Hongkongers are confused and being used by certain extremist forces in the city. Yet Western politicians have never condemned the mobs. Instead, they have been indiscriminately calling what happens in the city a "democratic movement." It looks like the West is supporting the Hong Kong opposition and radical protesters. They are trying to make these radical protesters the cannon fodder in the game with China.

"In America, you can not touch a policeman. That's number one important. Those protesters in Hong Kong must stop attacking policemen, reporters and other tourists," Jessica Hu, chairperson of U.S.-China Economic & Cultural Organization, told Xinhua.

George Galloway, a former member of British Parliament, says Hong Kong, the scene of ongoing protests, is no longer Britain's business. "The Hong Kong police have handled these events with less aggression, less violence, than any police force anywhere else in the world would do," he said.
