Photos show three post-90s learning to make Gold Painted Lacquerware at a workshop in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province.

Ningbo’s Gold Painted Lacquerware was originated in Hemudu Culture, dating back more than 7,000 years. In 2010, UNESCO listed the skill of making lacquerware as an intangible cultural heritage.

The process of making lacquer starts with the tapping by trees by making cuts in the bark and collecting the toxic sap. Once treated, it can be mixed with different colored pigments and painted on to a wooden surface to leave a glossy, varnished effect.

In the past, gifting lacquerware was an important wedding custom in wealthy Zhejiang Province.
